As we near our next run at the Triad, I think of all BNHM has accomplished in the last year. Heck, I don't even need to go over the whole year, I could just reference the last few months and that'd be plenty!
One thing we've done is really committed to rehearsing regularly. Once a week. Every week. That's more often than I currently work out!
Rehearsing!?!?!? Debbie, seriously? HOW can you possibly rehearse improvisation?
I'm so glad you asked...
Well, we don't sit around and write songs and then use them in the show. That'd be ridiculous and pointless. But we do practice all the skills necessary to creating a song. We practice rhyming, creating interesting memorable melodies, rhythm, style, syncopation and lyrical content. Yes, we really do practice putting our attention on these things! It can be fun! It can also be challenging and a little scary. We make an effort to keep stretching and growing as individual performers and also as a group. The better we know one another's strengths and weaknesses the better we are able to help each other work on our rough spots and challenge our instruments to grow.
This is why we rehearse.
This is how we grow.
This is why we do it!
